What we do when we hear a sound

At Advanced Hearing we provide comprehensive auditory processing assessments, auditory training therapy and effective classroom strategies. Testing is available for adults and children (school-aged and up), and includes the Dichotic Digits Test, Frequency Pattern Test (temporal patterning), Gaps in Noise (temporal resolution) and more.

The audiologist prepares an assessment report including:

  • An interpretation of the data (including a consideration of the consistency of the findings from different tests)
  • A summary of findings
  • Recommendations (including the need for referral)
  • An audiological treatment/management plan.

When to do an Auditory Processing assessment

If a hearing test has shown normal hearing but ongoing difficulties persist, then the problem may be an Auditory Processing Disorder. Difficulties recognising and interpreting sounds heard presents as:

  • Difficulties with listening and hearing, especially if there’s a lot of background noise and distractions
  • Difficulties following instructions
  • Difficulties staying focused, or being easily distracted
  • Difficulties remembering spoken instructions
  • Difficulties telling the difference between letters that sound similar, like ‘k’ and ‘g’, or ‘t’ and ‘d’
  • Difficulties remembering to say the beginning or end sounds of words when reading.
